Wandering With Stylist Kim Barik

The #WanderWithSM travel campaign was The SM Store’s first collaboration with stylist Kim Barik, and by the looks of it, it’s the start of a beautiful working relationship. The ensembles she created really inspired us to make travel plans

“I wanted it to be far from your stereotypical road trip outfits. I put together layering clothes to create cool combinations that will make the looks more interesting and showcase a bit of edginess. It revolves around a theme that adopts to an unfamiliar, off the track, road trip experience filled with adventure,” she says.

Born and raised in Tacloban, the 26 year-old half-Singaporean, half-Filipina stylist studied in School of Fashion and Arts (SoFA) and International Fashion Academy (IFA) in Shanghai.

We chatted more with Kim on her work, personal style, road trip essentials, and the places she has yet to go to.

Tell us how you got into styling. What made you decide that you wanted to do this?

From where I was brought up fashion is not the first choice for a career. I didn’t have much access nor exposure to fashion but I’ve always been inquisitive about it. Styling just sort of fell into my lap when I was taking Fashion Design and Marketing in SoFA, I undertook an internship with Luis Espiritu while studying. Ever since I never stopped learning everything that I could in styling. I read and read. The best part of styling is being able to collaborate with great creative minds, and every day on the job is an opportunity to learn, and explore new ideas. There’s no going back for me.

What other styling projects have you worked on?

I have worked on several fashion covers and editorials, runway shows, and campaigns. My career jumpstarted when I joined the reality TV show Mega Fashion Crew Reloaded and made it as a finalist. I’ll never forget that experience and the people I met along the way.

How would you describe your personal style?

I guess my style is kinda tomboy territory, because it is practical and straightforward — I wear a lot of sweaters, wide trousers, ripped denim, button downs and white sneakers. Pieces that follow a subdued hue palette. It’s a story of what I feel at a certain time. I basically just wear clothes that are easy to wear and effortless to carry. It’s all about being comfortable in an outfit.

Who are your style influences?

Phoebe Philo, Tilda Swinton.

What are your dream styling projects?

It’s quite a long shot but I dream (more like a goal) of managing my own styling studio one day.

What are your favorite road trips here in the Philippines?

La Union and Batangas!

Memorable road trip memories you’d like to share?

Most memorable would be the one where my friends and I planned a collaboration to shoot out of town. We ended up at a house by the lake with no power, no signal, no nothing, just a nice view and a perfectly situated getaway. We ended up sharing stories, listening to music, dancing, and swimming all day. The unanticipated turn of events during that trip made it unforgettable.

What are your road trip essentials?

My road trip checklist essentials are unblock Photoderm Max from Bioderma,  shades, my Polaroid camera, and fashion magazines.

What’s on your road trip playlist?

There’s a looot, I have an eclectic taste in music!
